These interesting photographs were taken by Steven Martin on the beaches of Florida, mostly on the southeast coast, in the 1980s.

I'm curious where these pictures were taken. I was a teenager in the 80s & I don't remember anyone wearing shorts that short! lol
ReplyDeletePeople wear them much shorter now. They aren't that short. It looks right to me.
DeleteI wore shorts that short in the 80's.
DeleteUgh yeah, they were called dolphin shorts. Everyone who was anyone wore them.
DeleteI grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and graduated HS in 1983. These pictures are complete déjà vu for me. I almost expected to see myself or my friends in them. I don't recognize any specific locations unfortunately but the hats from The Button and an FIU shirt make me believe it's somewhere in south Florida. As for the shorts, they were called "Dolphin shorts" and they were ubiquitous. My gf probably had 10-15 pairs lol
ReplyDeletesouth florida
ReplyDeleteAs a Southern California kid, there were some similarities, but these teens looked quite a bit different. I think Ft. Launder dale girls liked to wear their Dolphins higher up on their waists. :)
ReplyDeleteThe hair style on many of the girls looks more late 70's than early 80's. Its the "Farah Faucet" hair-do.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly how people wore their hair until the very late 80's.
DeleteThese pics look like they are from early 80's. Dolphin shorts, Bass flip flops, and feathered hair. I wasn't quite a teenager in the early 80's, but I still wore them constantly.
ReplyDeleteThe girls were not fat asses like they are today. Everyone looks happy, healthy and without the bad attitude. Goddamn, I hate the feminist's that ruined American Women. And the pervasive obesity started with high fructose corn syrup and low fat recommendations to increase profits.
ReplyDeleteThat is the first thing I noticed. No obesity. I noticed that difference in school photos of my parents compared to today; every body was healthy... and slim..
DeleteThey took pictures of the girls that were attractive. They weren't going to take pictures of the obese boys and girls. It's not like they didn't exist in the 80's.
DeleteMore like the 70's
ReplyDeleteQuit nitpicking - you're missing the point.
DeleteHmmm, 1982 at the very latest. More like '77.
ReplyDeleteYou don't remember Dolphin shorts?
ReplyDeleteThey are so damned cute. Most are tipping well over 180 lbs now.
ReplyDeleteWe were young, once.
And how ridiculous will Hollister and sports shirts be in 30 years?
Hair-larious!
ReplyDeleteDolfin Swimware is still in business. These mid 70's designs were for covering yourself at swim meets between events but became the "thing" from 1976ish on. They were made from the same quick drying nylon as the speedo style swimware. I still see them on occasion at garage sales. Any respectable Valley Girl wore them daily in So Cal from May until Sept.
ReplyDelete"Those were the days my friend, we'd thought they'd never end..."
