Michelle Obama is the 44th first lady of the United States and wife of U.S. President Barack Obama. Prior to her role as first lady, she was a lawyer, Chicago city administrator and community-outreach worker.
Obama graduated from Young Magnet High School, in Chicago, IL, in 1981, where she served in student council, was a member of the National Honor Society, and was salutatorian of her senior class.
As a student at Whitney Young Magnet High School, Obama was told by some teachers that “I was setting my sights too high,” the first lady recalled. “They told me I was never going to get into a school like Princeton. I still hear that doubt ringing in my head.”
The doubt made her even more determined, she said.
“So it was clear to me that nobody was going to take my hand and lead me to where I was going to go. Instead it was up to me to reach my own goal,” said Obama, who graduated from Whitney Young in 1981.
After attending Princeton, Obama obtained a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1988. Shortly thereafter she became an associate at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she met her future husband, Barack Obama (whom she mentored when he was a summer associate).
