Freddie Mercury During His 40th “Mad Hat Party” at Garden Lodge in Kensington, London on September 5, 1986

Freddie Mercury traipsed around his garden in a red cotton tracksuit, smoking a cigarette. A large, sequined, marabou-feather butterfly was perched atop his head.

It was his 40th birthday party on September 5, 1986, and he celebrated at his Kensington home, Garden Lodge, with a dress code of “mad hats.” The party was complete with a cake shaped like a magician’s hat with a kitten popping out.

These photographs were taken by Richard Young. He said about Freddie Mercury:

“His confidence was electric, his energy inspiring and he was one of the most professional people I’ve ever worked with.

“He was also the king of parties. His parties were always wild, full of laughter and special. When you were in Freddie’s inner circle you would always be given a nickname. I was Muriel – after Muriel Young, the 1950s TV presenter.”
