A jeep train usually refers to a line of coupled railway vehicles hauled by a jeep fitted with railway wagon wheels instead of normal road wheels. World War II jeeps were converted from road vehicles into steel-wheeled rail switchers, shunters, light locomotives, speeders or draisines.
Standard military jeeps, usually the Willys MB or Ford GPW models, were modified to be linked together like a train. The jeeps would connect via tow bars or specialized hitches, creating a convoy where one jeep pulled several others.
In some configurations, a lead jeep would tow a series of specially designed trailers, outfitted to carry supplies, equipment, or personnel. These trailers were equipped with rugged suspension systems to handle rough terrain.
Jeep trains were versatile for navigating mountainous, jungle, or desert terrain, allowing supply lines to reach isolated units. They were particularly useful in North Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe, where roads were limited or non-existent.
After the war, similar setups continued to be used in some civilian and industrial applications, such as forestry, mining, and agriculture, where rugged transportation was necessary.
