This striking image was taken by famed photographer David Bailey in 1988, when Princess Diana was around 27 years old. The late Princess of Wales reportedly hand-selected Bailey for this particular portrait because he “reflected her desire to establish a new photographic identity for herself.” Though the picture was commissioned by London’s National Gallery, it remained in the artist’s personal archive for over three decades.
Diana can be seen looking away from the camera in the photo. The pose is reminiscent of the “Shy Di” era, a nickname given to her by the press during the princess’ formative years in the spotlight.
