Besides being an amazing actor, Humphrey Bogart was an extremely accomplished chess player, almost of master level. His excellent chess skills were evidenced by his draw with US Champion Samuel Reshevsky. Bogart was also a US Chess Federation tournament director. He played almost daily, and if not between takes on movie sets with friends and cast members, then in the Hollywood Chess Club.
There are two great stories about life-long chess fanatic Humphrey Bogart:
1. During the 1920s in New York City, Humphrey Bogart hustled chess games for money in Central Park and at Coney Island in order to pay his bar tabs at his favorite speakeasies.
2. During World War II, Bogie played chess by mail with U.S. soldiers until he was instructed to stop by the F.B.I., which feared the chess notations were secret codes.
