Marilyn Monroe Photographed by Milton Greene for Look Magazine in 1953

In September 1953, Marilyn Monroe and Milton Greene had their debut shoot for Look magazine, done once the magazine’s crew had left. Milton had a penchant for using props, and for this session, Marilyn sported one of Amy Greene’s cherished sweater coats. However, due to their bold nature, Look magazine chose to feature only a select few images, primarily those with Marilyn seated on the ground.

After a full day of shooting, everyone went home leaving the two of them alone. It was at that time that Milton asked very politely if Marilyn would take off her clothes and put on Amys black sweater coat that she had brought from New York. He also asked if he could take the bandage off her ankle, which she had sprained during the filming of River of No Return and was given 4 days off. Since her ankle was very painful, she couldn’t stand and knelt for the entire roll of film. Together they created this nude sweater-coat series, considered much too risque for publishing.
