E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (or simply E.T.) is a 1982 science fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial he names E.T. who has been stranded on Earth. Along with his friends and family, Elliott must find a way to help E.T. find his way home. The film stars Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.
Drew Barrymore played Gertie, the adorable and spunky younger sister of Elliott, in the film. At just six years old, her performance was incredibly natural and added warmth and humor to the film. Her interactions with E.T., especially the scene where she first meets him and screams in shock, are some of the most memorable moments.
Director Steven Spielberg felt Barrymore had the right imagination for the role after she impressed him with a story that she led a punk rock band. He encouraged Barrymore’s belief that E.T. was real to help her deliver authentic emotions on screen.
