Metallica is an American heavy metal band. It was formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band’s fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer.
In the 1980s, Metallica became a global cult band by creating thrash metal that blended punk, NWOBHM, and Black Sabbath. Their albums Ride the Lightning (1984), Master of Puppets (1986), and ...And Justice for All (1988) are considered some of the greatest heavy metal music of all time.
By the end of the decade, Metallica had laid the groundwork for their massive success in the 1990s. They were already one of the biggest metal bands in the world—set to explode into superstardom with The Black Album in 1991.
