Amazing Behind the Scenes Photos of Marilyn Monroe Doing Hair Test for “The Prince and the Showgirl” (1957)

On July 25, 1956, Marilyn does a hair test for The Prince and The Showgirl in which she stars with Sir Laurence Olivier. Hair and make up tests were usually taken in the studio but this being Marilyn Monroe Productions, they chose an outdoors setting in England, most likely to be the gardens of Parkside house where Marilyn lived for four months. These photographs were taken by Milton H. Greene.

The Prince and the Showgirl is a 1957 romantic comedy film starring Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier, who also served as director and producer. The screenplay written by Terence Rattigan was based on his 1953 stage play The Sleeping Prince.

The film is famous for the on-set tensions between Monroe and Olivier. Monroe, at the peak of her fame, used Method acting, while Olivier, a classically trained Shakespearean actor, grew frustrated with her approach.

Despite the difficulties behind the scenes, Monroe’s performance is often praised, showcasing her charm and comedic timing. The making of the film was later dramatized in the 2011 movie My Week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams as Monroe and Kenneth Branagh as Olivier.
