Laros Lingerie Ads Illustrated by John La Gatta in the 1940s

John La Gatta (1894–1977) was an Italian-born American illustrator known for his elegant, glamorous depictions of women in the early 20th century. His work appeared in major magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Ladies’ Home Journal, and he created ads for top brands like Paramount Pictures, Ivory (soap), Laros (lingerie) and Campbell’s.

La Gatta used a distinctive “chalk-and-wash” technique that blended charcoal with thin oil paint. At his peak in the 1930s, he lived lavishly, later moving to California where he focused on portrait work and teaching at the Art Center School in Los Angeles until his death.
