Leon Wyczółkowski (1852–1936) was a prominent Polish painter, graphic artist, and educator, celebrated for his contributions to the Young Poland movement and Polish Realism. Born in Huta Miastowska near Garwolin, he studied under notable artists such as Wojciech Gerson, Jan Matejko, and Aleksander Wagner in Munich.
Wyczółkowski’s artistic evolution encompassed Realism, Impressionism, and Symbolism. His works often depicted dramatic landscapes, nudes, and pastoral scenes, characterized by impasto techniques and impressionist lighting effects. He also explored oriental themes and was renowned for his still lifes, particularly floral arrangements.
A founding member of the Society of Polish Artists “Sztuka” in 1897, Wyczółkowski served as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1895 to 1911 and at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts from 1934 until his death in 1936 . His legacy is preserved in major Polish institutions, including the National Museums in Kraków and Warsaw, and the District Museum in Bydgoszcz, which houses over 700 of his works.
