35 Fabulous Photos of Lillian Roth in the 1920s and 1930s

Born 1910 in Boston, Massachusetts, American singer and actress Lillian Roth spanned her career over six decades. She began performing at a young age, making her Broadway debut in 1917 and appearing in films as early as 1929. Roth gained prominence in the 1930s with roles in movies like The Love Parade (1929) and Animal Crackers (1930).

Despite her early success, Roth’s personal life was marked by struggles with alcoholism and multiple divorces. Her battle with addiction led to a decline in her career, but she achieved a comeback in the 1950s after sharing her story on the television program This Is Your Life. This appearance inspired her autobiography, I’ll Cry Tomorrow (1954), which was adapted into a 1955 film starring Susan Hayward.

Roth continued to work in theater and television, notably appearing in the Broadway musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962) and the Kander and Ebb musical 70, Girls, 70 (1971). She passed away in New York City in 1980, at the age of 69. Take a look at these fabulous photos to see the beauty of young Lillian Roth in the 1920s and 1930s.
