Born 1908 in Teramo, Abruzzo, Italian photographer Pasquale De Antonis was considered one of the best Italian photographers of paintings and sculptures, and a valid portraitist in the post-war period.
In the 1950s, encouraged by fashion journalist Irene Brin, whom he met in the Obelisco gallery on Via Sistina, of which she was a co-founder, he began to deal with high fashion. In 1965, Antonis was the first photographer to officially photograph the Sistine Chapel, using new photographic techniques and color.
In 1988, his hometown awarded him the “Paliotto d’Oro”, a prize reserved for illustrious people from Teramo. On the centenary of his birth (2008), Rome dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. Turin also dedicated an exhibition to the photographer from Teramo in 2012. The photographic collection is preserved at the Civico museo biblioteca dell’attore in Genoa.
Antonis died in 2001 in Rome, aged 93. These vintage photos are part of his work that Pasquale De Antonis took fashion portraits of classic beauties in the 1940s and ’50s.
